Lot 4552
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 1.79 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate (?), irregular mint, after 324. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to left. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / PTR Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC (Arelate) 294 (for possible prototype). Light deposits, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This is a mule combining an obverse of Constantine II with a reverse of Constantine I. The style is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. No 'VIRTVS AVGG' coins were minted outside Arelate and Rome. The camp gate on this coin clearly imitates Arelate in spite of the Treveran mint mark.
